My day at Wombley

So on May 30th I left Kingsmeadow and made my way to Wembley* now known as Wombley, I arrived at 12:30 and was given a quick tour of Wembley and taken to the Mascots changing room, was a bit nicer than my one at Kingsmeadow but still no shower and fur drier,  I’ll have to wait until New Plough Lane, hint hint Mayor of London!

I was hoping I could go see all our excited fans outside the ground and around the concourse, but Wembley said this wasn’t allowed, so instead I was allowed round the edge of the pitch,  when I first entered only a handful of fans were in the stadium,  but every time I looked the fans literally doubled in numbers,  I got as many highfives, hugs and photos with our fans as I could but the barriers at Wembley,  aren’t very mascot friendly, I was having to borrow the stewards seats to get closer to our fans!

Then it was time to meet the lucky children who would won the chance to be the mascot for the play off final,  and my pal/rival for the day Pilgrim Pete, for a photo call!

tmp_19183-IMG_20160530_234307886799844

Then we were told it was time for a mascot dance off to get the crowds going (Wimbledon fans didn’t need geeing up!) It was decided that this would take place in front of the Plymouth Argyle fans, so I knew had to throw some shapes, I cannot remember the tune of choice we had to dance to, but I recall it not being a song I would have chosen! I was first so I threw a few break dancing moves, sadly not enough room for my full repertoire,  before a bit of body popping and a moon walk finished with the splits, Pilgrim Pete had no chance!!  1-0 to Wimbledon 😀 the school boys team soon after making it 2-0 on the pitch against Mansfield in their cup final, and 2-0 in events to Wimbledon,  just needed the first team to win now for the hatrick (no pressure!!)

As I made my way back to our end I could see thousands of our fans had made their way in to the stadium,  and the sea of yellow and blue was developing in to an amazing site! On my way to our fans I saw the play off final trophy and I could not resist a bit of Womble intervention!

tmp_8874-IMG-20160601-WA0000694736910

As I got back to our end everywhere I looked was yellow and blue smiling faces, it really was an amazing site, I wanted to high five and hug every one of them, but those stupid barriers got in the way.

Then the Wembley official at about 14:40 said it was time for me to leave, I did what any good mascot would do and ignored him for as long as I could get away with and kept greeting our fans, but I was soon told my time was up and I had to leave the pitching, and I realised I wouldn’t be able to give the player’s a high five as they came on to the pitch, our good luck ritual. Thankfully luck was on our side though 😀

tmp_29141-IMG-20160530-WA0015-1149202079

As for the match well we know how that turned out and better reporter’s and bloggers have covered it better than I could, but in case you have had your head in the sand, we won 2-0 and apart from one great save from Kelle Roos, we always looked in control! The games came from Lyle Taylor baby, and then Adebayo “beast” Akinfenwa (eventually)  scored from the spot in the 11th minute of injury time!

And there it was we were officially promoted to League One, 14 years to the day that Afc Wimbledon were born!! A few Womble tears of pride were shed I’m not ashamed to admit!

Then as Wembley wouldn’t let me go and celebrate with the players and fans, I decided I would travel back on the train with the fans to celebrate,  or at least that was the plan until I was kidnapped by some Afc Wimbledon fans who had privately hired an old fashioned bus, with disco lights,  so I travelled back to Kingsmeadow in style busting some moves, to welcome the players back to the ground.

tmp_19183-IMG-20160530-WA0019-1280792848

And what a welcome the bars and car park were overflowing with fans, as the team coach pulled I’m to the car park to huge roars of we are going up, with the cheers getting louder and louder as each player stepped odd the coach proudly wearing their medals!

After greeting them back,  I soon sneaked off to bed all the excitement getting to me, and I let the players staff, and fans party, and us Wombles know how to party!!

I can’t finish this blog post without thanking those that have been told they won’t be having their contracts renewed:

firstly Sean Rigg,  Sean was brilliant last season,  popping up with a fair amount of goals, including a goal against that team we have to play in the league now, and nor forgetting the winner at Wycombe to set up the Fa Cup game against Liverpool,  sadly this season he couldn’t quite oust Barcham out of the starting eleven, wherever he will go they will gain a great player.

Secondly Callum Kennedy,  if there is ever a player,  young fans should be inspired by, it is Callum, he was told by Neal he was surplus to requirements,  but Callum didn’t listen he plugged away in pre season and forced Neal to offer him another contract,  a great example of refusing to give up, this season must have been frustrating,  watching Jon Meades making left back his own,  but Callum waited and once again grabbed his chance when Meades got injured. All this whilst having to deal with his dad passing away. A loyal servant who will always be remembered by me and many others.

Lastly but by no means least, Adebayo the beast Akinfenwa, again he had a much better season last year I am sure he will admit,  I mean how do you top scoring the winner against them,  and then scoring against your boyhood team Liverpool! But I’m not taking anything away from him, because the way he has ended this season has been immense,  all 3 appearances in the Play offs were amazing, he showed along with the rest of the players,  he wanted to get us up.

For me Bayo was a great player and man for our club, on and off the pitch ofter being nagged by his team mates who were driving that game, he refused to leave until every fan got their photo they desired. Legend is so easily said, but this man for me will always be a legend**, wherever he plays, they will gain a great player, man and Beast!!

**As is every player that plays his heart out in the yellow and blue.

One last person I have to thank (apart from the whole team, management,  volunteers and fans) is my minder this season Chris, he probably often wonders what he has got himself in to, but without him, I’d have missed a lot of fans for hugs and highfives, and stood on a few feet too, thank you Chris,  same again next season?

“PLEASE NOTE A VENUE CHANGE!” On the 6th September we are organising a Teddy Bears picnic & family fun afternoon from 12-3pm at King George V Playing Fields, Poole Road, Ewell KT19 9LY. The venue change is due to not being able to have a bouncy castle or the AFC Wimbledon inflatable at the other venue. The Parking is much better at King George’s and we have more space. Momentum helped Ollie Lovis and his family as he bravely battled cancer, sadly his battle ended on Sunday July 12th, and this picnic is a small way to ensure Ollie leaves a legacy.

The event is totally free (donations welcome) and I will be there with my mascot pals, including Mickey Mouse, Fireman Sam, Ariel, Snow White, Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Peppa & George pig & Twinkle the baby ballet teddy.

There’s face painting, glitter & henna tattoo’s, free entertainment including local young singers, baby ballet, AFC Wimbledon shoot out, bouncy castle, and a huge raffle with plenty of prizes for the family.

We are still looking for local businesses and the community to help us, we are looking for raffle or auction prizes, bottles of water to keep Haydon and his mascot pals.

If any companies can help us print about 200 flyers to promote the event in the local area, please get in touch.

We are also looking to borrow a generator for the bouncy castle, as well as gazebos (at least one with a side) and people to help get the gazebos up in the morning, so if you can help please contact us at theparsons08(at)gmail(dot)com

Happy 4th Birthday Ollie!

Today is Ollie’s 4th Birthday, something of which is quite an occasion, after he was told he had months to live just before Christmas, but this very brave, adorable and special boy, wasn’t going to miss on presents and cake!

On Sunday we celebrated his birthday in a great way, his mum Terri (also a brave and amazing lady, (as is dad Mark )came up with a plan just 4 weeks ago, to organise a Super Heroes walk raising money for Momentum, to help raise money for a boat on the Thames that families that cannot travel far, can have some where for refuge when needed.
ollie spidey

So in less than 4 weeks yesterday came together, thanks to the people at Momentum, over 200 people turned up on Nonsuch park, including over 10 mascots, with myself, Pete And Alice the Crystal Palace Eagles, KNK Kev, the mascot known just as the wolf, as well as Hello Kitty, Fireman Sam, Minnie Mouse, Anna, Elsa, Olaf, and Upsy Daisy and Iggle Piggle.

As well as those mascots, so many people came dressed as Super heroes, Ollie and his dad came as spider man, and wow did Mark pull off that lycra 😉 Bethan Ollie’s sister came as Elsa. And other children came as Bat Man, Super man, Spider Man, The Hulk, and so many more.

The Sun even came out to play, to join us on what was a super day, which made the conditions slightly tougher, but all the more worth while, we all set off around the park, which to this Womble felt a lot longer than a mile, but maybe because I kept going backwards and forwards for hugs and high fives (hey I cannot resist them!).

Then once we all finished the walk it was time for a giant picnic, me being the kind Womble I am, I went round happy to help people with any cakes and chocolate they couldn’t manage!

You can still donate to this excellent cause by clicking on this link: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=MomentumHeroes&isTeam=true

Momentum’s Heroe’s Walk – help celebrate Ollie’s 4th Birthday.

Apologies for the lack of recent posts, the football season got me a little over excited and carried away, but now the season is over, its back to those things that (whisper it) are more important than football.

A little update on Ollie Lovis, Ollie is still battling against cancer, but has good and bad days, he is getting more and more tired and some days only wakes up for a short while. On the 16th May it will be his 4th birthday, to celebrate, Momentum will be organising a Hero’s fancy dress walk on Sunday the 17th May from 11-2pm in Nonsuch Park, Ewell and would like to invite families to join in with them. The walk will be a 1 mile route around the park and will start at 12pm. Please feel free to bring a picnic afterwards and join them in the dog free area of Nonsuch park for entertainment and activities.

The idea of having a Momentum Hero’s fancy dress walk came from Terri Lovis, mum to Ollie . As you may know, Ollie was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer when he was 2 years old and has endured months of chemotherapy and proton therapy. Sadly in December the family had the heart breaking news that the cancer had returned and Ollie’s condition is now terminal with only months to live.

For this event I would love as many families to attend, but also as many mascots as possible, so this is a call to all Mascots please come along and join the party, in celebrating brave young Ollie’s 4th birthday, I especially am looking for owl and dinosaur mascots, Ollie absolutely adores dinosaurs, and has loved his visit’s from Alan and his owls, so any owl mascots, or dinosaurs, please, please give up an hour or so of your time and join me for a mile walk, and a party (party means cake and us mascots love cake!!)

momentum walk

All Momentum children and siblings are Heroes and to put on this event with the support of the local community walking and dressing up as their own hero’s will help raise funds for a Momentum boat on the Thames. This boat will provide a respite retreat for families to escape to when travelling far from home is not an option.

Momentum is a local charity supporting children, and their families, who are undergoing treatment for cancer and other life limiting conditions in Surrey and South West London. Established in 2004, Momentum has two core objectives; to provide immediate family support and to enhance healing environments at local hospitals.

Momentum’s work covers an extensive range of needs, offering support throughout the whole journey – from diagnosis, during treatment and beyond.

To register your interest please e mail Sarah@moment-um.org who will send out registration details and sponsorship forms. If you would like to volunteer on the day in any way please also contact Sarah. If you are unable to attend and would like to make a donation please visit our Virgin page http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/MomentumHeroes

Haydon visits Ollie & the children at The Royal Marsden hospital

On Monday Ollie was admitted to Royal Marsden hospital, after the news last week that Ollie’s cancer has also spread to his bones, he started chemotherapy on Monday, so this meant I would visit Ollie at the Royal Marsden thanks to Tanya working hard it was confirmed Tuesday, that I could visit Ollie and the children on the ward, which lead to me rushing round the shops buying presents for the other children as I felt I couldn’t turn up with just presents for Ollie, thanks to a few members of the public that donated at short notice to make it possible.

So at 2.30pm on Christmas Eve I visited Ollie first spending time with him opening the presents people and businesses including the Guardian newspaper had donated. The smiles as he opened the presents, the pop up dinosaur book, the dinosaur toys, and of course the Haydon the Womble toy seemed to cause the biggest smiles 😉

Here is Ollie with some of his presents:

tmp_13233-20141224_145953489058922

Ollie needed a toilet break, so I decided this was a good time to give him a break to see the other children, thanks to the excellent work Royal Marsden do, there was only 5 other children on the ward, the rest were allowed to go home for Christmas even if it was just for 24 hours.

I took presents to all the other children two were in isolation so I had to pass their presents through the door, and blow them a kiss and give them a wave, but their huge smiles said they were pleased to see me.

I met a two year old called Eva who gave the best high fives, the children range from 2 to 14 and it makes you realise that cancer really can affect all ages, but what all these children have in common except cancer, is that they are all so brave and can still give the biggest smiles and hugs.

It looked like Ollie was going to be allowed home for Christmas day, but will be returning in the evening, his mum sent me a link of when they celebrated Christmas Day on Sunday and it looks like they had the best time, all the family managing to smile, which must be hard.

Here’s the video enjoy it (try not to cry!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2YggcEN5X8&sns=em

Ollie’s mum said after my visit to the hospital he perked up and walked for the first time in two days, and wanted to walk to the bathroom to turn the light off and play with his dinosaur torch that was donated by a kind AFC Wimbledon fan.

Haydon isn’t just for Christmas so I will be staying in touch and following Ollie’s story as i’m sure he has many more chapters to tell, he really is a brave adorable and inspiring young man.

I also hope to carry on visiting and supporting Royal Marsden after my visit, any presents left over, that were donated, I gave to the nurses to give to the children when they returned to the ward today, or if they are brave in the future and deserve a treat.

I would also like to continue to get people to donate to https://www.justgiving.com/Momentum-Epsom/ since I posted the link last Thursday we have nearly raised £1000 it would be good to raise that amount again and again and really make a difference to the children’s ward at Epsom Hospital.

I will leave you with a picture of me with some of the Royal Marsden nurses, who do an excellent job, I hope you all have had a fabulous Christmas day, and if you have any unwanted presents, why not donate them to the children’s ward.

Ollie Lovis – A magical Christmas update.

Many thanks for the response for my appeal for Ollie Lovis to have a magical Christmas, I’ve received quite a few presents for Ollie and a couple for his little sister too. So now it would be nice if you would like to help if you could donate to Momentum via their just giving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/Momentum-Epsom

Momentum are raising money to improve the Children’s Ward at Epsom Hospital, Ollie’s family would love for something positive to come after (this is tough for me to type, so must be heartbreaking for his mum) his death.

So please help me to help Ollie’s legacy live on by donating no matter how small to Momentum.

Thanks to Ollie’s friends & family they surprised Ollie and his family, by turning their garden in to a winter wonderland.

On Tuesday he went to Wimbledon fire station.

On Sunday Santa is turning up in his sleigh with real reindeer to say hello.

And hopefully on Christmas Eve I will be visiting The Royal Marsden children’s ward (waiting for Royal Marsden to say it is ok) to see Ollie and give him his presents, and then visit all the other children, as Ollie will start Chemotherapy from Monday to try and prolong his life. It would be nice if any local businesses could maybe provide small presents for the other children on the ward, if this is at all possible, I know I have asked a lot already, but it would be nice to make all the children smile too!

Thank you to everyone that has sent me presents for Ollie.

Thank you to everyone who shared, liked, commented, on my first blog, please this blog is even more important than the first, as it would be really nice for Epsom Children’s ward to be Olle’s legacy, so like, share, retweet, tweet to celebrities etc, and help spread the word.

Help me to give brave Ollie the Christmas he deserves

Where do I start, I am the mascot for Afc Wimbledon, Haydon the Womble and I have started this blog for one purpose, young Ollie Lovis, in November 2013 Ollie was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma of the skull (a muscle /bone tumour). He had chemotherapy and proton therapy which he had to go to Florida for.

He finished treatment in June and initially it looked like the tumour was killed off but unfortunately on the latest scan the tumour has grown and he has weeks to months to live.

Ollie is a kind and gentle little boy who loves to chat with everyone he meets. He loves his little sister. He enjoys playing with dinosaurs (Favourite is dinosaur train episodes at moment! ) also likes being superman.

Superman is very apt for this young man as from the first time I was honoured to meet Ollie, when he was the mascot for the Afc Wimbledon v Torquay match last season, we immediately bonded with each other, it is impossible to not fall in love with OIllie with his infectious smile, despite all he has gone through.

ollie

After hearing of the very sad news this week, all I could think of was what can I do to help Ollie (as well as his little sister, mum & dad) have a special Christmas together, one that looks very likely unless there is some sort of miracle, being the last together.

If you are a company, business, tv show, newspaper, radio channel anyone, that think you can donate something, or help in anyway,  from as little as a toy dinosaur, please get in touch my email address is deancparsons08@gmail.com & I really do want to do what I can for this brave & inspiring family, they have not asked me to do this, its something I really do believe they deserve, please get in touch, share this post and lets make Ollie’s infectious smile beam this Christmas.

UPDATE: He’s having a pet scan at the moment. The youngest ever done without General anaesthetic – normally children under 6 are anaesthetised!  He was the youngest ever non GA MRI last week! Setting records of his own!!

Ollie apparently  is fascinated by Christmas lights, so if any garden centre’s, stores would like to donate, or give a discount please get in touch,

The family are actually going to celebrate Christmas on Sunday 21st December as Ollie starts a trial drug on Monday 22nd December, and they fear he may bot be well enough to celebrate on Christmas Day, so we literally have a week to make this happen
